TYPES OF FOAM

Plain FoamThe most general definition of foam is a substance that is formed by trapping many gas bubbles in a liquid or solid. Polyurethane foam (foam rubber) as it is solid & can be considered a type of colloid. This is the primary foam used in all furnishing and resting products including Mattresses.

MEMORY FOAM

Memory FoamMemory foam is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that add to its viscosity level, thereby increasing its density. It is often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. Depending on the chemicals used and its overall density, it is firmer in cool temperatures and softer when warm. Higher density memory foam reacts to body heat which allows it to mold itself to the shape of a warm body within a few minutes. A lower density memory foam is pressure-sensitive and will mold more quickly to the shape of the body.

Memory foam was originally developed by NASA to ease the pressure of extreme G-force during space shuttle take off. It was never used in the space program, but was subsequently used in medical applications, for example with patients suffering from pressure sores or bed-bound for a long period.

Memory foam was initially too expensive for general use, but in recent years it has become cheaper to produce and is now widely available. Its most common domestic applications are mattresses, pillows and mattress toppers (also known as mattress pads). It remains useful in medical-related uses, such as wheelchair seat cushions, hospital bed pillows, and padding for persons suffering long-term pain or postural problems; for example, a memory foam cervical pillow may alleviate chronic neck pain. Its heat-retaining properties are also helpful to some pain sufferers, who find the added warmth helps alleviate pain.

A memory foam mattress is usually denser than an ordinary foam mattress. This makes it more supportive – but also heavier. It is often seen as a good compromise between the comfort of a soft mattress and the supportiveness of a firm one. Memory foam mattresses often sell for more than traditional mattresses but they last longer.

We carry the latest in memory foam mattresses, toppers, and pillows. If you’ve never felt the comfort of memory foam, you will be surprised of what you’ve been missing. Stop by our showroom and feel the comfort of our large variety of Memory Foam products!

LATEX FOAM

Latex foamLatex

Latex is a naturally derived biodegradable product. It comes from the rubber tree. Latex is hypo-allergenic, and breathes to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Bacteria, mildew, and mold cannot live in latex foam. Independent tests prove that our latex foam is three times more resistant to dust mites and bacteria than ordinary mattresses. Latex can last up to 30 years.

Latex mattresses are the Cadillac of all mattresses. All latex and foam mattresses are "no flip" mattresses. The quality of the product is such that it does not require flipping or turning. Latex foam mattresses conform completely to body contours, providing exceptional comfort and support. The body contouring of the latex foam mattress encourages proper spinal alignment and reduces the stress on muscles and joints. For this reason, the latex foam mattress is perfect for anyone with back pain or arthritis. Body contouring also allows the foam mattress to accommodate any sleep position; whether it's on the stomach, side or back. No matter how many times a sleeper changes positions the latex foam will automatically adjust to new body contours and angles. By continually providing support where needed, latex foam drastically reduces pressure points and improves circulation. Most sleepers change positions to relieve pressure points, and with this problem eliminated, a latex foam mattress promotes uninterrupted, deep sleep.

In addition to relieving body aches and pains, a latex foam mattress has anti-allergy benefits; it is anti-microbial, dust mite resistant and mildew proof. These types of mattresses are very popular among allergy sufferers since finding an effective allergy-fighting mattress can be difficult. Trying to sleep while suffering from allergies is also very difficult. If you suffer from allergies, you may want to consider a latex foam mattress to help alleviate the allergy symptoms while you sleep.

Many of the benefits of latex foam mattresses are shared with memory foam mattresses. Both provide superior body contouring, direct comfort and support benefits and both are hypo-allergenic. However, since the latex foam mattress is derived from the rubber tree the latex foam is considered natural (or organic) as opposed to memory foam, which is completely synthetic. Memory foam is temperature sensitive, while latex foam is not. Memory foam is denser (heavier) than latex foam and latex foam mattresses are considered more durable than memory foam.

Ultimately, it is going to be your decision to choose which type of mattress is best suited for your needs. You are going to want a mattress that provides your body with the support and comfort it needs to be able to rest at night. Quality of sleep is very important in order to function and perform duties on a daily basis. If you can't decide which type of mattress suits you best, our foam experts here at Foam & home Decor will love to help you find exactly what fits your preference and particular need .

Foam Measurement and Durability

Measuring the quality of foam involves weighing a sample of foam, measuring its dimensions, and using the data to calculate a value.

Density - the measurement of mass per unit of volume expressed in pounds per cubic foot (pcf).

diagram
*Note – it is common for mattress retailers to express density simply as a number of pounds (lb or lbs). For example a 2lb high density foam mattress indicates a foam density of 2 pounds per cubic foot.

Foam density is widely regarded by foam manufacturers as the main factor determining the durability of a high density foam mattress. Durability is the ability of foam to retain its original comfort and support characteristics. In general, higher density beds are more durable. They are also more expensive to produce due to greater material content.

Density and Firmness

Our intuition tells us that dense foam is firm foam. But this is the most common misconception among consumers shopping for a high density memory foam mattress. In fact density is not directly dependant on firmness. Density is determined by weight, as Firmness is determined by the chemical composition of the foam. However, generally a high dense foam will feel more firmer due to it's superior stability support.

For example, a 3 lb density memory foam mattress can be softer than a 1.5 lb density foam mattress. General rule, which does vary from particular brands & processing type, 2.0lb foam and above classifies as "high dense foam" and anything below is classified as "low dense foam". High dense foam has a life value ranging from 5yrs to 315yrs to some ultra high dense foams that last a life time. Low dense foam usually last from 6 months to two yrs max before you begin to see the deterioration in the form of foam losing it's shape & comfort, a common problem that you see in lot's of brand new purchased furniture which was manufactured with low dense foam.
